Government Releases Provincial Election Finance Rules

The provincial government has released its proposed new rules for political fundraising at the provincial level. The changes, outlined in the Election Finances Statute Law Amendment Act, would:

  • Ban donations and loan guarantees from corporations and unions
  • Cap the amount of money third parties can spend on political advertising
  • Place new limits on the amount of money individuals can donate to a political party, candidate, constituency association, leadership contestant, or nomination contestant
  • Create a per-vote subsidy for political parties, based on the number of votes they received in the last general election
